History of Tirta Gangga Royal Heritage & Architecture
Tirta Gangga was built in 1946 by the King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik (whose official title was Anak Agung Gede Agung). Inspired by a trip to the Palace of Versailles, the monarch took a hands-on role in designing the majestic layout and sprawling gardens to complement his nearby water palace, Taman Ujung.
The name Tirta Gangga translates to "Water of the Ganges," honoring the holy river in India revered by Hindus worldwide. Although Mount Agung's catastrophic eruption in 1963 destroyed much of the original estate, extensive restoration work has beautifully preserved its grand stone carvings, tiered fountains, and vibrant koi ponds for generations to enjoy.
